chloramphenicol

chloramphenicol
An antibiotic from Streptomycetes venezuelae that inhibits protein synthesis in prokaryotes and in mitochondria and chloroplasts by acting on the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is relatively toxic but finds wide application in medicine.
